What Is Mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma, malignant mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer that typically develops from transformed cells originating in the mesothelium, which is the protective lining that covers many of the internal organs of the body. It is usually caused by exposure to asbestos.

There are generally three different types of mesothelioma with the first being one of the more common types of malignant mesothelioma which develops in the pleural lining of the lung. A less common type of mesothelioma is malignant peritoneal which is a cancer in the abdominal lining. One of the rarest types of mesothelioma is cancer of the pericardial lining of the heart and is known as malignant pericardial mesothelioma.

The cause for these forms of mesothelioma is being exposed to asbestos, with very few individuals diagnosed not being exposed. Treatments are available with the most widely used being chemotherapy and radiation. Surgery may also be an option for a few who are diagnosed early enough. Often care is multi-faceted and may combine one or two of the treatments above.

Causes Of Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a form of cancer. The cause of mesothelioma is very clear with about 85% of those diagnosed with mesothelioma been linked to asbestos. For a long time scientists along with doctors speculated about the dangers of asbestos and it wasn’t until 1999 when there was a conclusive link. Sadly for millions of individuals around the world who had worked with asbestos all their lives it was too late as they had already developed the disease.

Prognosis of Mesothelioma

One of the most important factors in mesothelioma progress is the stage at which the patient is diagnosed. The diagnosis is typically in four stages, stage one is the least extensive and of course stage four is the most severe. Mesothelioma prognosis can range significantly from two to three years to only a month or so.

One of the main problems concerning mesothelioma prognosis is that the disease if often misdiagnosed as symptoms are very similar to other disorders and diseases. For those who are diagnosed in the very early stages the prognosis has exceeded five or more years, with many patients living a active lifestyle.
